3D Marching Drill Simulator – Unity (WebGL Build Ready)
Overview
Developing a next-generation rehearsal and design platform for marching arts educators, staff, and performers. MADA bridges the gap between drill design and on-field execution by providing a real-time, cinematic 3D environment to simulate and rehearse drill with per-count accuracy. Built for use in rehearsals and instructional settings, MADA gives directors, visual staff, and students an intuitive tool to view formations, pace transitions, and correct spacing in real-time, enhancing understanding and retention. More than just a design tool, it acts as a virtual assistant for visual teaching, modernizing how programs prepare and refine performances.
Key Contributions
Engineered a count-based drill architecture enabling per-set, per-count marcher positioning with accurate BPM-driven movement using tempo curves and metronome sync.
Refactored the entire marcher system to AAA standards: clean architecture, separation of concerns, and service-based pattern (e.g., MarcherPositionsManager, MarcherPositionService, MarcherDashedPathCoordinator).
Built a visual editing toolkit: transform gizmos, group selection, path visualizers, and a formation shape system (box, arc, etc.) for intuitive on-field editing.
Implemented selector ring and hold logic with visual feedback (e.g., purple for holds, blue for selected), matching real-world rehearsal expectations.
Integrated a WebGL build pipeline, automated via Rider/PowerShell, and deployed to GitHub Pages with domain linking and diagnostic metadata injection.
Created a user account system, mock-auth backed by Google Sheets and transitioning to Google Cloud Functions for secure config and backend proxying.
Technologies
Unity 3D, C# (AAA patterns), Unity’s New Input System
Google Cloud (Functions, Sheets), WebGL Templates
Custom tools: JSON serialization (v2.0.0 schema), real-time path interpolation, BPM metronome playback, auto-inferred position tagging (march, hold, inferred)
Vision & Impact
MADA empowers designers to visualize every movement with cinematic fluidity, replacing outdated 2D notation with fully interactive 3D simulation. From choreographing formations to syncing counts and tempo changes, MADA bridges artistry and technology, creating a modern standard for drill design education, creativity, and execution.
